Evil songwriters with their schemes to conquer the pop world…

I came across the Billboard article about the Men At Work plagiarism case.

“Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree,” wasn’t just a Girl Guide campfire anthem, it was something all us kids, boys as well, sang for Aussie nursery rhymes. I can’t imagine that the songwriters of Men At Work cunningly ripped off melodies or ideas from it to write their iconic hit “Down Under”.

So what if it shares some similarities? So many songs are based on the same eight notes of the major scale and so many melodies and tunes are infused into our brains from birth, surely there has to be some leeway for coincidences. The songs are still completely distinct entities and I don’t think the public have ever confused the two.

At any rate the judge only order a 5% penalty on the royalties…
